Joining the UQMC gives you access to numerous excellent benefits, these are outlined below.
The club runs trips every weekend – usually a climbing trip and a hiking / camping trip. The UQMC also runs trips over the mid-semester, and mid-year trips as well as the much anticipated club trip to the world-class Blue Mountains at the end of each year. For details on upcoming trips see the Trips page and the Forum.
As a member of the UQMC you can borrow gear from the club. This includes a harness, helmets, ropes, lead climbing kits, trad racks and more! To see a full list of our gear, and how to go about borrowing it, check out our Gear page.
We also have gear nights once a semester at K2 or Pinnacle Sports for UQMC members. These nights are pretty special, as the store stays open just for us and we get special discounts on all of the gear you need to get started on your outdoor adventures.
Climbing Nights at Kangaroo Point
We have one night of kangaroo point climbing a week, included as part of your membership. At these nights you get to learn how to belay, tie in, climb, and even how to set up a top rope anchor system. For more info check our the Kangaroo Point Climbing page, or the KP Forum.
Experienced members of the club will help you learn the skills you need for your outdoor pursuit. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Climbing Technique
- Rope Safety
- Lead Climbing
- Trad Climbing
- Multi Pitch Climbing
For more information about the skills you can learn, have a look at our Skill Development Cards
As a member you get great discounts on gear at the following retailers:
You also get $2 off of every casual entry into Urban Climb.
UQMC sponsors certified and community training to members who have demonstrated aptitude and dedication to the club. The club normally pays up to 50% of the training.
Certified training includes:
- Pinnacle Sports Vertical Rescue
- Wilderness First Aid
Community training includes:
- Rescue training
- Aid Climbing
- Establishing and maintaining routes
The UQMC has a very active social scene. We climb twice a week at Kangaroo Point, and do regular weekend trips throughout the semester. We also have additional social events like Trip Report Nights, Pot Luck, and one of our favourites: The Bi-Annual Inter-Club Social Bouldering Competition.
If you’re wondering why we all seem to dress the same, it’s partly because the club makes some awesome shirts and singlets. Every year there’s a new design, so pop down to KP and chat with an exec to get your hands on one.
As a member of the UQMC you are insured when on official club trips and climbing using club gear.
